You will laugh, cry, hold your breath in suspense, and shout in relief and joy while reading this book. The honesty of the writing touched so many chords within me. Getting past the “why me” and placing trust in God is a journey, and facing what should be a terminal illness makes the journey even more intense.

This is a book that captures your imagination early and carries it all the way to the last page. Unfulfilled dreams became the catalyst to a journey that would change her and many others around her! You will encounter fortitude, perseverance, joy, despair, and a real questioning of God and dreams! Lastly she discovered a gratitude for those that came along on the journey and for a God that pushed her to realize her childhood dreams! The faith story will draw me back to it for a reread!

Wendy Slattery is a great soul and author. Her authenticity, perfect humor, wisdom, and courage shine in her book.

I read this book in two sessions. It would have been just one but sleep had to happen.

It is the story of a girl who had dreams that were larger than her environment could accommodate. Fortunately, the dreams remained until, after many interesting detours, she was able to renew them. Along the way, a faith in God steered the course even as that faith has its own ups and downs.

A health crisis illustrates clearly that doctors do not always make the best patients. But with an understanding of the medical situation, a loving and ever-supporting family, and her faith, the crisis was confronted and, ultimately, conquered.

I have known the author since we were in the 2nd grade.

I bought the book because the author is a long-time neighbor and friend. I started reading the book for the same reason. I finished the book because it’s a compelling story of a remarkable woman overcoming disadvantages, prejudices, and obstacles to realize her dreams and ambitions.

The author credits her faith and close relationship with God for keeping her journey on track. You will also get to know a woman whose God-given courage and belief in her own possibilities allowed her to ignore the many naysayers who tried to block her way.

In reading Wendy’s story, you will live the freedom, and sometimes cruelty, of the child rearing standards of the 1950s and 60s. You will experience the shock of clashing cultures when she started college in the early 1970s. You will feel her pride in her early career success in technical sales. You will sense the less-than-complete satisfaction with her first career choice, and the passion that led her on her unlikely path to becoming a doctor.

And you will live the pain, despair, and ultimate peace that Wendy found in her battle with cancer.

Wendolyn Slattery writes her memoir after a diagnosis of an incurable cancer to her grandchildren as a legacy showcasing her life. Born in the 1950’s on a small farm on the outskirts of a rural town in Minnesota, life was quite different “back then.” This is an era gone by and the author relates the many differences in parenting, growing up, and the turbulent 1960’s. Revealing her trials, vulnerabilities, mistakes, and life-lessons learned, the book is a delightful read to both her grandchildren and readers to gleam back into a portal of time gone by as her life “unfolded” from childhood to present.

A resounding theme throughout her book is Christ in her life. As she states He, “…quietly but powerfully wove a tapestry around my life that included them.” An unseen and surprising miracle also takes place towards the end of the book, as God did the impossible in her life! This is really what the author wants her grandchildren and the readers to relish! The Edge of the Unseen World is a God-centered adventurous Odyssey culminating in a wonderful “encore” that only God could accomplish.

Wendolyn Slattery lovingly points readers towards God and Eternity. Readers will find an interesting, insightful, and enveloping story of a child with 4 siblings growing up in a very different time than our modern world that will entertain and forever leave an indelible mark upon the readers’ hearts. I found her early years captivating and the tending to her little sheep “Tammy” endearing. It was then that Wendolyn imagined being a doctor someday. It was clear that life was not easy; they worked hard, and chores on a farm were something the children learned they could not avoid. I think many will relate to Slattery as a child, especially perhaps a grandchild. Getting to know the author was a welcome treat. Her aspirations and hopes as a child growing into an adult were incredibly memorable. She also mentions growing up “in religion,” often, wondering where God was sometimes, especially when on the brink of dying. Humorous at times, she points out that the “legacies” we leave behind are for the next generation.

This comes as a wonderful and uplifting memoir delving into The Edge of the Unseen World and a revealing of the impossible. A photo gallery is included, which adds to the book.
