The Edge of the Unseen World

A Doctor’s Journey from the Imaginary to the Impossible

It is a true story (memoir) of a 9-year-old girl with a hard-scrabble childhood who grew up on a midwestern farm in the 1950s and 1960s with the dream to become a doctor. It was not to be due to society’s view of acceptable roles for women. Life took unexpected detours during the rebellious days of the 1970s when she found herself with a meaningless college degree that somehow launched her into the computer world as it was exploding. Soon, the golden days dissolved into discontent, divorce, and a lack of direction that only God could turn around. But He did.

After three years and many personal struggles in the preparation to apply for medical school, Wendy, now 42 years old, was accepted to finally enter her calling to be the doctor she always wanted to be. The next years illuminated the faith and transformation of the unseen world as she reached the place she had looked for all of her early life. She was 51 years old when she reached her goal, but unfortunately, life took a nasty turn when terminal blood cancer seemed to come out of nowhere. The narrative now takes on one of survival through a series of difficult heartbreaks with a determination to leave a legacy for her grandchildren, infused with a powerful sense of purpose and inspiration, and what it means to build a life on the foundations of the divine.
